Happy New Year - News
Hello there,
I wish you an amazing 2013. Eight months have passed since my last journal entry, so I'm still alive and a lot of great things have happened last year. I got married and I finished a new book.
I tried once more to find a literary agent and I wish I'm more lucky this time; if not, I will try to write another book until I find an agent and a big publisher and to pursue my dream.
Stay tuned for more news and art!
hugs,
Marilena

If you're going to be writing a traditional novel with few or no illustrations, there is no reason you shouldn't try for an agent and go the traditional route. Your odds of having a true hit (bestseller level) aren't that great, but you stand to gain more from a publishing house--especially one of the bigger firms.
I am working on two science fantasy novels of my own, and I plan to go the traditional route when they are ready. In all honesty, I wouldn't choose self-publishing unless, like you, I had no other options. Literally. Self-publishing almost never pays off in a major way. There are entirely too many scams, and you have to devote considerable time, money and resources in order to make it work. And even then, your chances of simply breaking even are slim to none. I've heard more horror stories than success stories when it comes to self-publishing. But the biggest strike against it (for me, at least) is that self-publishing and vanity presses do nothing to get you in with the reputable publishing houses. It doesn't count as part of your track record.
Basic gist, I'd rather not deal with something that is unlikely to get me anywhere significant in its own right. If you want to write illustrated novels, you'll have to stick with self-publishing. The real question is this: what appeals to you on a personal level? Do you want your illustrations to be an integral part of this story, or can you live without it?
